Social media is always growing and evolving, and there were some pretty big changes this past year. No matter what your preferred platform may be, here are some of the biggest changes we saw in social media during 2022!

Live videos have been around for a while now. Youtube first introduced live videos in 2011, then other streaming platforms followed. However, live videos have become more prevalent this past year on other platforms, such as TikTok and Instagram and has transformed into so much more. What once started as a fun way to talk to your friends and followers, has now become a key way for influencers and businesses to communicate with their audience. According to Stan Ventures, almost 82% of audiences prefer live videos on social media. It is much more personal and allows the audience to interact in real time through the comments.

In 2022, we saw lots of UGC on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and especially TikTok. This has led to many users shopping online and giving businesses the outcome they wanted from their UGC marketing strategy. User-generated content (UGC) is exactly what it sounds like, content created by users that has been posted online. If you have used social media, you have seen UGC or maybe even posted your own! This strategy is great for businesses looking to promote their products in a more casual and authentic way. Although social media is great, it can sometimes come off as artificial due to oversaturation, which can turn people away. UGC is a way for businesses to get their products or services out there in a way that is more likely to provide the social proof that the audience may be looking for.

One of the largest and most impactful changes we saw in 2022 was the influence of TikTok. TikTok began as a platform for younger users to share trendy lip-syncing videos or dance routine videos, but it had transformed into so much more. TikTok has been a platform for all to share their creative side, current favorite products, story-times, makeup routine, fashion favorites, and the list goes on! There is something on TikTok for everyone, and that's why the platform has 800 million users! We have seen the impact TikTok has made on other platforms this year including Instagram and Facebook promoting Reels, and Youtube heavily promoting Shorts this year (they're trying to keep up!).

2022 was a great year for social media! We saw a lot of improvements and changes that will change the trajectory of social media in 2023. Although we don't quite know what to expect for the new year, we can assume it's going to be bigger and better than the last!
